The Project consists of both renovating the existing 21,238 SF school and building 17,800 SF of new building additions to accommodate the conversion to a full day kindergarten program, as well as updating the buildings ability to appropriately support an updated educational curriculum.
The renovations will involve converting the current kitchen and multi-purpose room into school offices, conference room, a nurse's suite, guidance office, and K-1 library/media center. The existing faculty room/nurse's office/school office will be converted into a special education classroom that can be divided into three smaller rooms.
One of the first grade classrooms will also be converted to a special education classroom that can be divided into two smaller rooms. The art/music/library room will be returned to its original use as a regular classroom. The remainder of the first grade classrooms will be updated, as will the bathrooms. Two of the existing Kindergarten classrooms will be enlarged to 1100 SF, while the third is converted into a faculty lounge and storage/workrooms.
The new construction will create space for four 1100 SF Kindergarten classrooms, a multi-purpose room, a satellite kitchen, an art/music classroom, a second bathroom, and additional storage facilities. The multi-purpose room will be the size of a regulation basketball court and will have the ability to sub-divide into two smaller rooms where one part could function as the Cafeteria, and the other an activity or performance space.
The art/music classroom is adjacent to the multi-purpose room and is furnished with an operable partition which, when open, allows the room to function as a stage for the multi-purpose room.
The new construction will also include a new bus loop that will serve both Charlotte Lappla and Don Gill Elementary Schools. It contains a staff parking area and a bus queuing zone. The bus queuing zone will also function as a hard surface play area between bus drop-off and pick-up times. As a result of having a new busing area, the driveways found in the front of each school will be dedicated to parent drop-off and pick-up, as well as visitor parking.
Another result of the construction work is rerouting storm water so that it is properly directed to drain into the storm sewer lines, thus de-watering the school site and surrounding properties.
