Alternative Solutions

The Pennsylvania Department of Education requires the investigation of at least 2 and as many as 8 different options for development facility solutions. The Wellsboro Area School District has investigated the following options:
The selected option is described last.

Option 1

Deferred Maintenance of the existing schools: Charlotte Lappla Elementary, Don Gill Elementary, Rock L. Butler Middle, and the Senior High School. Maintain current grade configuration of K-1, 2-4, 5-8, 9-12. The District Administrative Office would not be included in the work.

Option 2

Maintain current grade configuration of K-1, 2-4, 5-8, 9-12. The District Administrative Office would not be included in the work.

Option 3

Renovate, add 6 classrooms, and expand the kitchen at Charlotte Lappla Elementary. Renovate Rock L. Butler Middle School. Renovate the Auditorium and Industrial Arts shops, create a Physical Education addition and a cafeteria/kitchen addition, and combine 2 small classrooms into 1 standard classroom at the Senior High School. Change grade configuration to K-2, 3-5, 6-8, 9-12. The District Administrative Office and Don Gill Elementary School would not be included in the work.

Option 4

Close the existing District Administration Office and convert Charlotte Lappla Elementary into a new District Administation Office and District Kitchen building. Build a new K-2 Elementary School. Renovate Rock L. Butler Middle School. Deferred maintenance of and addition to Senior High School. Change grade configuration to K-2, 3-5, 6-8, 9-12. Don Gill Elementary School would not be included in the work.

Option 5

Close the existing DAO and convert Charlotte Lappla Elementary into a new DAO and District Kitchen building. Change grades located at other school buildings so that Don Gill would house K-2, Rock L. Butler would house 3-5, and the former Senior High School would house 6-8. Build a new High School. This changes the grade configuration to K-2, 3-5, 6-8, 9-12. Deferred maintenance would occur at Rock L. Butler and the former Senior High School. Don Gill Elementary School would not be included in the maintenance work.

Option 6

Close the existing DAO and convert Charlotte Lappla Elementary into a new DAO and District Kitchen building. Change grades located at other school buildings so that Don Gill would house K-2 and Rock L. Butler would house 3-5. Build a new Middle School for 6-8. Renovate and build additions at the Senior High School. This changes the grade configuration to K-2, 3-5, 6-8, 9-12. Don Gill Elementary School and Rock L. Butler would not be included in the maintenance/renovation work.

Option 7

Close the existing DAO and convert Charlotte Lappla Elementary into a new DAO and District Kitchen building. Change grades located at other school buildings so that Don Gill would house K-3, Rock L. Butler would house 4-6, and the Senior High School would house 10-12. Build a new Middle School for 7-9. This changes the grade configuration to K-3, 4-6, 7-9, 10-12.

Option 8 (Option 2B)

Close the existing District Administration Office. Deferred maintenance of Charlotte Lappla Elementary with addition of 2 new classrooms and a DAO wing. Deferred Maintenance of Don Gill Elementary and Rock L. Butler Middle School. Deferred maintenance of and addition to Senior High School. Maintain current grade configuration of K-1, 2-4, 5-8, 9-12.

Selected Option

Option 2B without DAO wing at Charlotte Lappla Elementary. Therefore the existing District Administrion Offices would remain open. Although the grade levels have been confirmed for the HS, the decision as to new/renovated has been placed on hold until extensive curriculum planning can be completed. The work at Don Gill and Rock L. Butler schools has been postponed.
