Manoa Elementary School

School District of Haverford Township

New K-5 Elementary

McKissick Associates is currently completing the Design Development Phase for the Manoa Elementary School in Haverford Township just outside of Philadelphia. The School District of Haverford Township began as a facilities study in 2000 to determine the scope of the Board's initiative to provide sufficient classroom space for all students and to ensure that all district schools meet the highest standards for safety and cost-effective maintenance.

McKissick Associates was asked to reevaluate the needs of the Manoa School in the summer of 2005 and analyze options for renovation or replacement of the current structure. The outcome of this study was a decision to build a new Manoa School a block away from the existing school in order to provide the necessary classroom space and meet the safety and maintenance standards.

In the fall of 2005, the district authorized McKissick Associates to proceed with the design of the new elementary school. McKissick Associates interviewed key staff members of the existing elementary school, as well as central administration, food service, and maintenance directors. The interviews framed the overall functionality of the building; including classroom configuration, traffic flow, and recreational space.

The recently completed Design Development Phase brings before the District, School Board and Community, a building designed for a student population of 620 and a staff compliment of 83, including volunteers and aides. The facility will house four classes per grade level from grades K-5. The new building, which will be located on the Williamson Fields site, will maximize the amount of athletic field space that will remain available to the District and community for lacrosse, soccer, field hockey, football, etc. Construction documents are scheduled to be complete in December 2006 for bidding and actual construction is scheduled to be complete by June 2008 for move in by the beginning of the 2008-2009 school year.
