East Ward Elementary School has undergone 24,000 square feet of new construction in two additions, extensive renovation of 8,600 square feet of existing area, and renovation of the building’s remaining 41,000 square feet. Renovations to the three floors of the “newer” portion of the school, constructed in 1968, include new special education classrooms, faculty areas, and new and upgraded classrooms. Existing classrooms received new floors, walls, and finishes, and a new heating, ventilation and air-conditioning system was installed. A new addition at the eastern end of East Ward, facing Route 30, includes new art rooms, a kiln area and music rooms. A two-story addition to the western end of the 1968 building serves as the school’s main entrance and houses the lobby, healthcare suite, administrative and guidance offices on the first floor. The second floor features a state-of-the-art library, computer lab and communications center. The original East Ward Building, built in 1922, was razed in Summer 1997 to make room for the construction of a new gymnasium for use by both the school and community.
