The Cumberland Perry Area Vocational Technical School project includes renovations to the 127,800 SF building constructed in 1968 and a new 24,500 SF addition. The objective of the project was to create a new state-of-the-art diesel mechanics shop and to improve the accessibility of the building to meet the requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act. The challenge of the renovation work was to modify the two-story carpentry, horticulture, diesel, HVAC, welding, auto body, auto mechanics, and precision mechanics shops for handicapped accessibility. This was achieved by relocating the diesel, carpentry, and horticulture shops to new construction, thus allowing space for classrooms and accessible bathrooms on the lower level adjacent to each shop. This “found space” also allowed room for three ramp systems that link the upper and lower levels of the building. The new diesel and carpentry shops will be enlarged in order to better serve these growing programs.
