With new legislation affecting the construction of schools in the state of Pennsylvania, many districts are facing difficult choices with creating the best learning environment for their students. New construction will be limited and many districts will be required to adapt space they have to meet changing needs. Although several projects McKissick Associates are currently working on started before legislation was passed, they are all projects that would be possible within the requirements set forth by Act 1.
Both Big Spring Area School District and East Lycoming School District have been faced with improvements that would be possible under this legislative act.
Big Spring has undertaken to adapt 2 existing building for better use by the students in the district. The old high school has been adapted for use as a middle school. With a limited budget, the building was given a face lift and work is soon to begin on the old middle school for conversion into an elementary school. The district is applying energy efficiency measures in the majority of their facilities through an ESCO program. The elementary school will share ground-source heating and cooling systems with the adjacent middle school.
East Lycoming built an additional building on the high school site to house career and technology courses available as part of the vocational program. This newly constructed building includes ESCO programs as an additional node of the adjacent high school. The thermally enhanced structure will house pro-grams for automotive, food industry and health occupations.
