McKissick Associates has been selected by the Haverford School District for both design and feasibility study work, commencing with the new $16.1 million Chestnutwold Elementary School. The Haverford Township School Board engaged McKissick Associates to design the new school to accommodate educational needs in the growing suburban Philadelphia community. Earlier this summer, McKissick Associates' principal Vern McKissick III, AIA, joined the Haverford Township School Board in kicking off the district's $50 + million building program.
Located in a residential community in northeastern Delaware County, adjoining the Philadelphia City, Haverford has long been one of the premier school districts in the Delaware Valley, with a long history of academic achievement, national and international recognition. In 1996, it was named one of the "100 Best Buys in Public Education in the United States" by Money magazine.
The demolition of the former Chestnutwold School was completed in spring 2005. While historic, the stone-clad wooden structure, closed since 1985, had deteriorated beyond repair. While the demolition was unfortunate, according to architect Vern McKissick, "The quality of the stone from the demolished structure, most of it including lintels, and ornamentation will be recycled and incorporated into the new Chestnutwold structure. In addition to preserving a piece of the past for the neighborhood, the re-use of building materials follows the LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) sustainability guidelines."
McKissick continued, "Located upon a small irregular site that required a total of 38 zoning and planning variances to construct, the plan for the new three story Chestnutwold School is based upon the principles of sustainability; reuse of a previously developed site, life cycle materials selection, practicality, and durability - as well as being visually attractive - all design components which form an aesthetically pleasing structure for the long-term."
Additionally, McKissick Associates has also undertaken the design of two smaller school renovation projects at the Chatham Park and Coopertown elementary schools in the district, and is currently working on the schematic design for a second new elementary school for the district, estimated at a cost of $23 million.
