McKissick Appointed by Governor to DGS Review Board

May 24, 2007

Vern L. McKissick III, AIA, was recently appointed to the Commonwealth Department of General Services Review Board for a two-year term by Pennsylvania Governor Edward G. Rendell.

The Review Board will work directly with James P. Creedon, Deputy Secretary for Public Works of the Department of General Services, organizing and reviewing submissions for design and engineering projects. Additionally, the review board will coordinate with other state agencies and commissions relative to their needs relative to design and engineering services.

"Vern brings architectural expertise that will enhance the selection committee's ability to identify the best professionals for DGS projects," said Creedon. "We were happy to work with the Pennsylvania Chapter of the American Institute of Architects on recruiting Mr. McKissick to the Committee."

McKissick, principal of the Harrisburg-based McKissick Associates, PC, was invited by the Governor's office to interview for the position based upon the recommendation of the Pennsylvania state board of the American Institute of Architects. He will be the sole architect on the DGS review board, serving with a landscape architect, two engineers and a contractor. The members of the review board will be responsible for selecting firms to be awarded design and engineering work at all state facilities, including colleges when projects are funded directly by the Commonwealth.

McKissick received a Bachelors of Architecture degree from The Pennsylvania State University in 1986 with continued graduate work in both Construction Management and Business from the same school, as well as graduate work in law at the Widener School of Law. A registered architect licensed in Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, Virginia, West Virginia, Ohio and North Carolina, he is also a registered educational facilities planner, a LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certified architectural designer, and a member of the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards.

A member of the Architect's Committee of the Harrisburg Urban Studio, McKissick has considerable involvement with the City of Harrisburg through executive board membership in the Historic Harrisburg Association and has served on the Harrisburg Planning Commission since 1997. He was awarded the National Civil War Museum Design award in 1999; the Pennsylvania Masonry Contractors Association Grand Award (twice) for educational facility design; and numerous AIA design commendations for various educational facility designs throughout Pennsylvania. Mr. McKissick also serves as the Historic Architectural Review Board Architect for Wellsboro Borough in Tioga County.
