Seven
years ago, McKissick Associates began helping St.
Stephen's Episcopal Cathedral in Harrisburg find
space for its school. St. Stephen's had been
running the school in its church at 221 N. Front
St., but it was out of room.

Vern
McKissick addressed members of the Pennsylvania Planning
Association (PPA) during their recent annual conference in
Harrisburg. McKissick provided background and insights
regarding the recent renovation of St. Stephen's Episcopal
Cathedral School during the Green Buildings Tour session of
the conference.
The
church and school, located on Front Street in the city, was
the first religious institution in the nation to register
its facilities with the United States Green Building Council
and has applied for a LEED (Leadership in Energy and
Environmental Design) rating. The major renovation was to
convert the one-block site's largest building, a four-story
1920s-era parking garage, into classroom and multipurpose
space for the 200-student, K-8 school.
According
to McKissick, the St. Stephen's project is a clear example
of how responsible, sustainable architecture should be
achieved. "It's more than just designing a building; it's
employing all available resources to create an improved,
more efficient environment." He concluded the tour by
explaining to the Pennsylvania Planning Association members
that, "The city, the residents and developers all work
together in Harrisburg to make these things work."
