This 1970s school was completely modernized and "renewed". The school needed new library space, a larger cafeteria and a quality performance space, but they didn't want to take away land from their athletic programs. Instead, a new home for those functions was found within an internal courtyard (no longer used to best capacity). Bulldozers entered through the basement and came through the interior walls to insert a new high-tech, whimsically styled library and cafetorium.
The rededication event was held to present the completely updated facility to the public. When final paperwork is complete, this school will be certified as a green building under the GreenGlobes™ program. Political and community leaders were on hand to tour the modernized building, explore the zero-energy library and enjoy a musical presentation by the students on the new cafetorium stage.
During the day, the stage is closed via acoustically-sealed folding doors and can actually be used as an instructional classroom. The cafetorium has several lighting configurations which allow it to function effectively as a quality performance space as well as a well-lit cafeteria, study hall and testing location. When in use as an auditorium, large wood-veneered doors close off the visible food service areas and equipment so that the mixed use function is less visually apparent.
